The hidden caravan park in Victor Harbor?

bluff

The Adare property has ideal accommodation and facilities for camps, family holidays, day trips, conferences, and school groups. Our caravan park accommodation suits small or large groups, and includes holiday units and cabins, and on-site caravans.

Adare "Castle" is the affectionate name given to the gracious, historic house built in 1893 nestled among 2.5 hectares of tranquility beside the Hindmarsh River. Shady trees, including an olive grove, are a feature of the spacious, grassed grounds. The main building is a major landmark in the area, with its four spires gracing the skyline.

Located on the Fleurieu Peninsula, about one hour's drive south of Adelaide, Adare is conveniently placed within easy walking distance of the many delights of Victor Harbor and the surrounding natural attractions.

History

The Adare site was founded by Govenor Hindmarsh's family and originally known as "Mootaparinga Farm" in a reflection of its local aboriginal heritage.

The original house was a cottage, before the Cudmore family bought it in 1891 and made extensive additions which resulted in a layout including 19 rooms, a cellar, tower and three turrets.

Adare House

Much of the material used in the renovation was shipped from England. The Ballroom ceiling features an etched glass skylight, with all but one of the original lead light windows with their hand-painted inserts still in place, and some of the decorative hand-painted ceilings also remain. There was originally a canon in the drive, and the stylish garden included an ornamental fountain, which still exists. Mr. Cudmore used the tower room as a museum for his many collections, and some of Miss Cudmore's hand-painted floral designs on the door panels can still be seen.

The house as it now stands was completed in 1893 and named "Adare" after the Cudmore family's home in Ireland. Since 1954, Adare has been owned by The Uniting Church (formerly the Methodist Church), being used as both a youth camp and a retreat. The house is a well known local landmark and an architecturally significant heritage building.
